Character Name: Shizuo Heiwajima
Canon: Durarara!!
Canon Point: The end of Volume 6
Background/History: http://durarara.wikia.com/wiki/Shizuo_Heiwajima (Note: Because the first three volumes weren't translated, His history goes through the anime and right into volume 4.)

Personality: The first thing that one should understand is that Shizuo is a man who hates violence. His ultimate dream is to be the type of person that can actually have a peaceful life. Unfortunately, circumstances and his own physiology ruined that from a young age. With such a dream, but a body (including the brain,) that had no control and a hair trigger temper, he didn't seem to be able to make that desire a reality. So there was always a frustration from realizing this kind of failure. While this was his goal and unfortunate circumstance, that didn't simply make the man.

The thing that he's most known for, which can't be denied as a part of his personality, is a nearly uncontrollable temper. While there are some things that can keep it reigned in (and was certainly better at this point than even a year ago!) it wasn't hard to unleash the maelstrom that was often described as pure violence. The triggers are very specific, set by what Shizuo believes is right and wrong, including attacking someone and kidnapping women and children. Being so quick to spark, the reasons tend to be very direct and thus (with Shizuo's ability) quick to handle. While that's usually through violence, it surprisingly doesn't overflow to people that are uninvolved. Despite the multitude of easy triggers, he has a code and even further a way to partition and keep it from swaying what he thinks the wrong thing to do is. There's only one thing that's deserved a long-burning anger and actual hatred. Izaya Orihara. A person that Shizuo didn't like the 'feel' of from the very instant they met and it proved true from the fight they had only seconds later and as he proved to have all his fingers in too many pies. Izaya was someone that was shady, dodgy, and would lure people into convoluted schemes for whatever reasons he had- Shizuo didn't care and didn't really want to understand him. But people that spoke to someone and seemed to have some hidden agenda behind everything, it irritated him to no end. Of course, that's just one of his triggers. That and their history have honed the hatred to the point where one could say he had an instinct about when Izaya was around, or involved with something. (Then again, there were other times when he was just irritated enough to want to beat Izaya up because there wasn't anyone else to direct it at.)

Yet as much as he hated Izaya, someone that was demoted to being on the same level as a flea, that partition of what he was and wasn't angry with kept the hatred from spilling out to people that the guy was involved with. Shizuo was good friends with Celty, who worked many courier jobs for Izaya. Shinra was annoying, but because he was focused more on the unusual aspects of what Shizuo was able to do and spoke nonsense most of the time. It didn't really have anything to do with Izaya. Probably the best example of this is the casual relations he had with Izaya's younger twin sisters, Mairu and Kururi. They've known him for years, primarily being fans of Shizuo's idol brother, but he could handle them with ease. Even if their personalities would remind him of the flea occasionally, the girls were generally direct with their intentions and he's had little problem around them. Even the times he's lost his temper, it was to scold the young girls. Of course it helped that he had an absolute belief that children were innocent, and no harm should come to them. Which was why he wouldn't even show Akane a scary face when she mentioned what Izaya told her (that Shizuo was an assassin to kill her Yakuza father. To which she went to kill Shizuo first.)

In fact, while it was part of his unshakeable belief about children, the days he met Akane was a real testament to how much he had grown as a person. To keep from scaring a child, he held murderous rage and a normally uncontrollable temper underneath a dorky smile and an act his friend said would've rivaled his brother. Instead of being someone that immediately broke things and didn't care about who was scared or how the scene would look, there was a consideration put into his actions. A misunderstanding and unfortunate meeting (a frame job arranged by Izaya,) he actually showed restraint and tried to clear things up with words. This used to be unthinkable. Except even when that didn't work, and the gangsters didn't believe him, he didn't get annoyed to the point of beating them up. Instead he fled and decided to let things cool off while determining and setting this goal of having Izaya pay. He even managed to restrain himself again and only attack those that had kidnapped some women (teenage girls, even,) and calmly asked who was involved. Shizuo even had the consideration to not damage the bike of someone uninvolved. It could really be amounted to Shizuo having wanted to hold onto the values he had growing up, and wanting to be cool like actual heroes, but these things truly reflected the recent growth he had as a person. While some might say it was making him weaker, it showed that after all of these years, all of the times when his luck and Izaya's interference made him a bit of a kamikaze, he was able to round out as a person- even to those that wouldn't have thought it possible, having known him for so long. While he'd never do anything to endanger or bring trouble to his friends, family or employers before, this was a profoundly higher level of consideration than he had before.

But there's so much more to that side, which was the easy think to think of when it came to what kind of person Shizuo was. He's a good person with strong values or what was right and wrong. Someone that valued and took some things very seriously. One of those things was his family, and most particularly his brother Kasuka. Probably because Kasuka was never afraid of staying right beside him, and knowing that it was his outbursts that made Kasuka as solemn and self-controlled, he was easily the most important person and had the most say. Many things that he said to Shizuo were taken so seriously, even to a literal point, that they lasted to this day. He cherished everything that he received from others and had also given. It's the reason why he wore the bartender suits and glasses that his brother and Tom had given him, and why either getting damaged would lead to his rage being unleashed. He'd do anything for Kasuka, and do whatever was necessary to keep him safe. Whether it was to show up at shoots, take care of his brother's cat, or get help for some stranger at his brother's request. Perhaps it's part of a desire to be someone that his brother can be proud of, but it makes his opinion the most important one. This is true to the point that he could even go into a funk (which can be adorably sad for someone informed enough,) for even thinking that Kasuka was disappointed in him.

And while it's very easy to explain his actions to someone, with how base his obscure simplicity is, even those that know him would be surprised at how blunt Shizuo could be about himself. Generally it's true, but when looking at it very simply, most of the time he's been ready to demean himself and it reflects how little faith, appreciation and confidence he has in himself. This is something that, despite having many good acquaintances and people that are actually friends, he compares himself to being someone lonely and friendless like Izaya. He's frustrated with his failures at controlling his body and the violence it causes, and so aware of how much it has minimized his social ability that he's blind to a lot of his good parts. That he does have friends and acquaintances that he'd defend with everything he had if they were in trouble. That he's the one of those people with a kind of heroism that he'd do anything to keep a young girl safe no matter how fatal it could be to himself, with not even a debating thought, and have that girl first in mind. Someone that wants to use the cheesy lines heard in films and shows with good guys beating the obvious bad guys, even if their in a pinch. That no matter how angry he is, and lost in the violence his body causes, the voice of reason or a friend could be enough to bring him down to his otherwise easy-going self. It wasn't until a crowd of people possessed by demons insisted they loved him when getting into a fight with him, that the idea that anyone would feel like that towards him- Someone that was so monstrous and scared too many to want to be close to him- that he even started accepted himself enough to grow as much as he had.

In the end, he's a guy with a condition that makes him seem like a monster to most people that see him. But really Shizuo's just a dork that loves his brother, cherishes everyone he's made ties with and has a self-acknowledged set of responsibilities, who's just starting to accept and grow into the person he probably could've been earlier if he hadn't been through so many trials since high school.

Abilities/Powers: The main thing to understand about everything that Shizuo could do is that his brain is damaged. Well, it wasn't really damaged, but the best explanation and theory is that there is a peculiarity to how his adrenal gland developed. Otherwise he essentially is a normal human, with no supernatural or nonhuman history in the Heiwajima bloodline. Why it's believed to be adrenaline based is because Shizuo lacks the subconscious control of strength one uses, which is most commonly seen in dire situations when the chemicals in the adrenal gland is released. At the same time, it explains his temper, due to the hormone instigating a fight-or-flight response and essentially being triggered into fighting. (It's also probably why he's lanky and such, as part of the body's reaction to adrenaline is to break down fat for energy.)

Now what this did was, from a young age, have someone with an unbelievably short temper with no thought of weight for the things around as Shizuo would grab it to use against the dumbass that pissed him off. As the body couldn't handle lifting the weight of a refrigerator, or the force of slamming a school desk into a wall, this led to a lot of breaks and fractures. The unbelievable part that no one really understands is how, as this continued his entire life, he recovered from injuries that should leave him paralyzed or dead, and actually get stronger. Each time, his skeletal and muscular structure get denser to withstand the stress and avoid constant breaking and tearing. As that started keeping up, Shizuo's lack of subconscious control of strength made it so he could put up with more abuse of lifting things to the point of casually being able to lift things that would require tow trucks and heavy machinery to move. At the same time he grew accustomed to pain, and honestly probably has a lot of nerve damage that keeps him from realizing when something should hurt.

All together, this makes Shizuo very scary for being (technically) a normal human. Someone that can take being hit by a truck without flinching, and not actually realize that he lost consciousness from being shot and not slipping on wet cement like he thought. Bullets aside, as they have physics and velocity on their side, there's very little that actually can manage to cause injuries deeper than 5 millimeters. At the same time, he can lift a motorcycle with one hand and toss it across a yard (breaking a tree upon collision,) and has also lifted trucks when they've run over and landed on top of him. It's allowed him to keep up with people, and even scale buildings and jump rooftops despite a lack of actual skill, and dealing with Izaya has taught him to catch knives and break them in his teeth.. With all of this, 'word of god' puts him as one of the top 5 strongest people in that universe, rivaling third with two other people. And that's only one of the reasons why Durarara!! and Narita-verse is a little ridonkulous.

Items/Weapons: Sunglasses and two extra sets of his uniform.
Sample Entry: (While this is a sample intended for another game, the feeling and responses/lack of extreme reaction to an unknown setting is still the same.)
[The video starts with the device under Shizuo's hand, the camera a little cockeyed up towards him. That was sign enough that he was sitting on the ground. For just a couple of moments, he has a soft smile that would surprise anyone that knew the man, despite the smudgy scrapes on his face, red bow tie undone and lack of glasses at that time. His hand is up, as if it was resting on something that was in his lap just before having shown up.

Once the moment passed however, the smile dropped and there was nothing but confusion as that one hand drops.]

... Akane? Did I lose conscious-

[Looking around during that, he cuts himself off when noticing that it was a PCD under his hand. Frowning, he takes a few seconds of trying to sort things out. After scratching the back of his head a little, Shizuo picked the device up while getting up to his feet. It's coming back to him, though taking a bit as he's still looking around as if expecting this 'Akane' to be nearby.]

Right, this place. Ad-something was it? Hey, just to be sure- There ain't some little kid named Akane around, right?
Sample Entry Two:
There was a problem; one that kept Shizuo walking around the same city block at a pace he was used to from his and Tom-san's job. Passing by Russia Sushi for the fourth time already, not even sparing a wave for a familiar acquaintance, he continued to walk with both arms crossed over his chest while it seemed like there was something important on the ground he had to find. Despite this he managed to keep with the flow of the pedestrian traffic if only because that was easily 70% of job. Not that he was working at that time, having a few hours until that moment.

No, instead the blond spent another hour sorting everything in his head and not letting the self-inflicted irritation get to him. Tom actually had offered to help, but this was simply a thing he had to figure out on his own. Simon did nothing but offer sushi when he passed, and dammit if he wanted to eat he wouldn't be walking past. The past few days he didn't have the chance to get this done because some people thought it was okay to start fights where other people could get hurt, and there was also a target that took longer to find than usual. Almost bitterly Shizuo took out a cigarette to light up while muttering to himself, "Ah, it's pretty pathetic huh?"

There wasn't anyone to actually answer him of course. Calling them would probably disrupt their afternoon and he couldn't just ask for help on this sort of thing. Few things would actually leave Shizuo in a state to stew around when he was actually reaching the end of a deadline.

Just as Shizuo was taking his phone out, it started to ring by some sort of coincidence. With no hesitation he answered it while walking for a quieter location. "Hey, I was gonna call ya. Overseas? Sounds unnecessary for that, but you can't help it I guess. Sure, I'll take care of Dokusonmaru in the meantime. We'll see you when you get back."

There's a period of silence, even when the person on the phone had finished speaking. "Hey, Kasuka... Happy birthday. Mm. See ya."

Ending the call, it seemed there was a bit of Heiwajima luck at hand. There was technically more time to get the present, though Shizuo would still try to get it before the day ended. Something else was realized as well.

"Ah, I'm gonna have to go shopping."
