Character
Name: Shizuo Heiwajima
Canon: Durarara!!
Age: 24
History: Drrr!! Wiki Shizuo is from after Episode 25, which is essentially before Volume 4 of the light novels.
Reason for Playing: Player-caused tragedy: During episode 25 from Shizuo's rampage to 'kill' Izaya, unfortunate timing, misinterpretations and Izaya. This all leads Shizuo to believe that he had killed his brother from using one of the many signs that had been thrown. Being unable to contact Kasuka (due to scheduling,) his manager saying that Shizuo should know better why they can't talk and side comments from Izaya here and there it becomes a valid fear. While he should know better than to fall for such a trick, circumstances line up in a way that he 'conveniently' comes across the RECOVERjoy ad. If it brought Kasuka back, or at least fixed the problem with his strength and temper to keep it from happening again... He'd be willing to do almost anything.
Personality: Before there's any misunderstanding, Shizuo hates violence. He'd always hated violence, really. Unfortunately as a child, he'd lost whatever was supposed to control the rage and flow of adrenaline in his body. While in situations that'd get any boy upset, there was this loss of control that would just have the extreme violence... happen. However, he hates violence. It just happened, and there was no control over it. Which lead to both he and the things around him to break. Really, all he had wanted from the beginning was to live a peaceful life. It's just that between his temper and Izaya, it never seemed possible. It's just a good thing that, by this point, it was easier to let go of the anger if given an excuse or distraction by a familiar and friendly enough person.
To put it simply, while Shizuo's a good man, he has a violently dangerous temper that even he despises. It's given him a goal to become stronger, and hopefully strong enough to control the rage that pours out. Because of all this, Shizuo has a serious fear of losing control and messing up again. He's gotten a better since accepting this part of him, thanks to the 'Saika incident,' but anger management takes time. Unfortunately, there are plenty of people (like Izaya,) who know how to spark the temper. Not just people who see others as toys, but those that just have rotten personalities. Other triggers include those that attack first, constantly give weak or 'lame' excuses, and those that have attacked his friends. Also Izaya in general, being both cause and outlet. Despite this deep and instinctual hatred towards Izaya however, it doesn't spread out to his associates. He gets along with the guy's sisters, Kururi and Mairu, as one very good example. The twins are fans of his brother, and they don't care that he wants to wipe Izaya off the face of the Earth. In fact, he doesn't really lose his temper around them, but instead will move them to a place that makes them less of a hassle. It's not as simple as them also saying they were willing to kill their brother, but the twins are honest and don't share their brother's similar habits.
Another thing Shizuo sees about himself is that he's not good with relationships/society. So he seeks connections with people like Tom, Kasuka, and Celty. Really he has more connections than just that, but they're less... close. While seeming to be casual and a bit unattached, there are those he respects. Like Celty, whom he's known 'officially' since High School. It's people like her that he could confide in, and not explode when they wonder what's caused him to be in a bad mood. Of course, in those bad moods one might want to keep distance, but they treat him like any other human being and that kindness is enough to help. They provide a grounding element when someone goes by and Triggers him. Without it, Shizuo will announce that he holds no responsibility and the person that provoked him has no right to complain about whatever happens next. It's a very simple logic, which adapts to fit his situation more than it does to control that temper of his.
One other thing that should be noted is that Shizuo loves his brother. Kasuka was one of the few that was never scared of him, and they originally stayed connected even when Kasuka's acting career came up. With Kasuka/Yuuhei's support and encouragement for Shizuo to keep the current job, he had given Shizuo several sets of bartender uniforms. Because it was from his little brother, Shizuo still wears those clothes today, and any damage to the attire counts as one of his main triggers. The biggest time during the season, when Shizuo seemed to be in a state of unease, it was because he thought Kasuka was disappointed that he had lost the bartending job (having been fired after Izaya framed him for murder.) It wasn't until some time later that he was passing by the area his brother had been filming at that they were able to close the distance. After sharing a look, Kasuka nodding to him, he instantly had felt better. Strangers (and Izaya) bringing up his little brother's name, or stage name, always gets some sort of reaction. When his name is brought up, and someone brings up a resemblance between the two brothers, Shizuo will stop destroying things... for only a moment. Call Yuuhei a douchebag? Get ready for your next flight, because he will punch you across the city. Sometimes when Kasuka is working out in public, he'll hang around and be ready to protect his brother against any physical threats. Basically, Shizuo really loves his little brother. It's no surprise to anyone that actually knows him.
Shizuo's family, and primarily Kasuka, are the ones to thank for any real social skills and 'rules' that he follows. Always being there for him and doing their best to act like his 'condition' didn't cause problems for them all had brought him to take their feelings and 'lessons' more strongly than if it were from anyone else. It's why he takes things like letters and gifts so seriously, giving them a chance even if it seems like a trick, and has that advice stick. As he had gotten older, this regard to those that treat him like a normal person extended to those that would later be considered friends. In middle school that had been Tom, a senpai that had suggested he bleach his hair to have people think twice about bothering him. Treating him like anyone else, it had Shizuo respect him until the present when Tom-senpai had actually gotten him a consistent job after Izaya had framed him for murder and led to the loss of the bartender job. Because these people are his most solid connections, their well being is one of the most important things. If someone or something attacks them, it's unforgivable. The source of them being harmed or threatened becomes a focus for his rage to the point that, as long as others aren't in the way, that 'source' would be the only one to be attacked. An example of this is when Celty had shared that the Slasher had attacked her, and while she was fine, Shizuo had gotten right onto the bike and started a 'kill' mantra to keep himself under control until he had a chance to beat the Slasher to death, as his intention was.
Those that are around long enough, just in general, tend to learn that he's quite... base. This isn't to say that he's dumb, but instead very simple in choices and how things are accomplished. There's no reason to over-think, because that just makes problems unnecessarily complicated. While this makes it easy to lead Shizuo into traps or generally hide things, it makes the man capable of noticing things that everyone is too busy to notice, or capable of what others haven't. This is also why, as easy as it was to lead Shizuo into traps, manipulating him was considerably harder. To the point that Izaya would probably prefer to trick and manipulate those around him to either keep Shizuo out of the way, or to get the specific effect he wanted. Aside from having a knack of finding him, Shizuo has managed to approach and voice the probability of when Izaya's actually behind the strange chaos that tends to happen in Ikebukuro. Then again, when he's been around these things since high school, it's probably a trained reaction. So you have someone simple enough to lead right into the middle of a murder scene, or walk into the path of a moving truck, but also manage to decide that he can walk after being shot in the abdomen and leg, or simply see past someone's attempt to bullshit him into taking certain actions or attacking someone for a made-up reason.
Abilities: As extraordinary as Shizuo's abilities seem, most of them can be explained through constant stress and conditioning. Of them all, there is only one thing that is 'natural' but ultimately inexplicable: His uncontrollable temper and the strength connected to it. The loosest theory was one provided by Shinra when they were children, and how the section of his brain that controls the adrenal gland either had a disorder or malformation. Which is why, while some people are able to tap into an exorbitant amount of strength in extreme situations (see women lifting cars when children are stuck under them,) this kind of natural limit on one's strength to keep it from tearing their bodies apart isn't actually present for Shizuo. Which allows an unusual level of strength, but at the same time allows little to no control over his temper, having been the cause of many rampages.
Because of this, his body had been conditioned to recover and become desensitized to the pain that most physical injuries have caused. It's not that he doesn't get injured, but the body is either already used to the level of abuse that is being sustained or he has mentally learned to consider it to be 'nothing.' The damage is still present. It's due to all the constant remodeling that his muscle and bones had gone through that they developed to be denser and to stay as thin and wiry as he is, instead of looking as built as his strength should show.
The last thing would be the parkour/free running and reflexive skills that Shizuo has from having to chase and survive going to High School with Izaya. It's led to a necessity for taking unique practices in chasing him down, and the skill to react to thrown projectiles.
